What B100 and B20 mean
The number is the percentage of biodiesel. B100 is pure biodiesel. B20 is 20% biodiesel blended with 80% mineral diesel, a common blend because it works in many diesel engines with few changes. Lower blends such as B5 are closer still to ordinary diesel.
Before switching, check the blend your engine manufacturer approves. Using a blend above the approved level can affect your warranty.
Advantages and disadvantages of biodiesel
Advantages: it is renewable, it cuts lifecycle carbon emissions compared with mineral diesel, it is biodegradable, and its high lubricity is good for fuel pumps and injectors.
Disadvantages: it can thicken in cold weather, it absorbs water, and it has a shorter storage life. It also loosens old deposits, so the first tanks after switching can block filters; plan an early filter change.
