In shortHeavy fuel oil (HFO) is a residual fuel oil burnt in industrial boilers, furnaces, kilns and power generation. Fuel-It supplies HFO in bulk to industry and mining in South Africa, on spot or contract terms. HFO is viscous and needs heated handling, so we confirm grade, viscosity and delivery conditions with every quote.
Heavy fuel oil specification
| Product | Heavy fuel oil, also called residual fuel oil, furnace oil or burner fuel |
|---|---|
| Grades | HFO grades offered (viscosity classes) |
| Handling | Stored and pumped heated, to keep the viscosity workable |
| Key properties on the certificate | Viscosity, density, sulphur, water and sediment, flash point, pour point |
| Uses | Boilers, furnaces, kilns, power generation |
| Minimum order | HFO minimum order |
What is heavy fuel oil used for?
- Steam and process heat: industrial boilers in food, paper, chemicals and textiles.
- Kilns and furnaces: cement, bricks, ceramics and metal processing.
- Mining and smelting: drying, roasting and furnaces. See fuel for mining.
- Power generation: engines and boilers built for residual fuel.
The specifications that matter
Two loads of “HFO” can burn very differently. Ask for these on every certificate of analysis: viscosity (decides heating and atomisation), density, sulphur (emissions and corrosion), water and sediment (burner problems), flash point (safe handling) and pour point (how warm it must be kept). We confirm these for your burner before the first delivery.
Emissions and permits
Large combustion installations may need an Atmospheric Emission Licence under the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act, and the fuel's sulphur content affects what you emit. Check your licence conditions before changing fuel grade. This is orientation, not legal advice.

Heavy fuel oil: questions buyers ask
What is heavy fuel oil?
Heavy fuel oil (HFO) is a viscous residual fuel oil left after lighter products are refined out of crude. It is burnt in industrial boilers, furnaces, kilns and power plants.
What is the difference between HFO and diesel?
HFO is much thicker and must be heated to pump and burn it. It is cheaper per unit of energy but needs dedicated heated storage, pipework and burners. Diesel flows at normal temperatures.
Is furnace oil the same as HFO?
Usually, yes. Furnace oil, residual fuel oil and burner fuel are common names for heavy fuel oil grades. Always buy by specification, not by name.
Do I need heated storage for HFO?
Yes. HFO must be kept warm in storage and pipework so it can be pumped and atomised. The temperature depends on the grade’s viscosity and pour point.
Who supplies heavy fuel oil in South Africa?
Refiners, importers and licensed wholesalers. Fuel-It supplies HFO in bulk, on spot or contract terms, with a certificate of analysis for every batch.
