50 ppm or 500 ppm: which diesel do you need?

50 ppm diesel carries a tenth of the sulphur of 500 ppm. Modern on-road trucks, bakkies and common-rail engines, and any engine with a diesel particulate filter or other exhaust after-treatment, need it. Using higher-sulphur fuel in these engines can damage the after-treatment system and void warranties.

500 ppm diesel suits older engines, earthmoving plant, tractors, generators and burners where the manufacturer allows it. Many mines and farms run both: 50 ppm for the newer fleet, 500 ppm for older machines, in separate, clearly labelled tanks.

If you aren't sure, check the engine manufacturer's handbook, or send us the makes and models in your fleet and we'll tell you which grade the manufacturers specify.

Clean diesel you can prove

Diesel adulteration is South Africa's fuel story of 2026. SARS testing found diesel containing up to 68% illuminating paraffin, and more than 100 suspected illicit depots were identified (BusinessTech, 2026). Paraffin is taxed far less than diesel, so a price that looks too good usually is.

That's why every Fuel-It delivery comes with proof you can check on the spot: a certificate of analysis for the batch, seal numbers recorded on the delivery note, and a metered quantity. Read our guide on how to spot adulterated diesel.

Diesel refund paperwork, done properly

If your business farms, mines or works in forestry, part of the fuel levy and Road Accident Fund levy on eligible diesel may be refundable through SARS. Claims stand or fall on records. Our tax invoices show the litres, grade, date and delivery address of every load, so your logbooks start from clean source documents.

Read the SARS diesel refund guide for what to keep and how claims work.

Diesel pricing

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) publishes a wholesale list price for diesel every month; it changes on the first Wednesday. On 2 September 2026 the wholesale price of 50 ppm diesel rose R3.14 a litre and 500 ppm rose R2.93 a litre.

Your delivered bulk price depends on grade, volume, distance and payment terms, so we quote it per order. Every quote states how long it is valid, because prices can move by more than R3 a litre in a month. Follow the monthly figures on our diesel price page.

Diesel: questions buyers ask

Not answered here? Ask us on WhatsApp

What is the minimum diesel order you deliver?

It depends on where you are and the size of truck that can reach your tank. Send us your volume and town and we confirm the minimum for your site before you order.

How quickly can you deliver diesel?

Lead times depend on your region and the volume. When you accept a quote we confirm a delivery date and time window, and we tell you early if anything changes.

Do you supply both 50 ppm and 500 ppm diesel?

Yes. We supply 50 ppm and 500 ppm diesel made to SANS 342. If you run both, keep them in separate, labelled tanks so the right grade goes into the right engine.

How do I know the diesel isn’t mixed with paraffin?

Every load comes with a certificate of analysis for the batch, seal numbers recorded on the delivery note and a metered quantity. Check the seals before offloading, and keep a sealed sample from each delivery. Our adulterated diesel guide explains what else to look for.

Can I claim the SARS diesel refund on diesel bought from Fuel-It?

If your business qualifies, yes. Our tax invoices show the litres, grade, date and delivery address you need for your records. The claim itself is between you and SARS; see our diesel refund guide.

Do you deliver diesel outside South Africa?

Yes. We supply cross-border into Southern Africa. Documents, routes and lead times differ by country; see cross-border fuel supply.

How is the bulk diesel price worked out?

It starts from the DMPR’s monthly wholesale list price, then reflects your volume, grade, delivery distance and payment terms. We quote a delivered price per order, with a clear validity period.
